Deputy Bobby Nolen and Deputy Kevan Ward were shot and killed when they gave a ride to an 82-year-old man whose car had broken down. Unknown to the deputies, the man had a revolver hidden in his jacket. As they entered the city limits of Ripley the man shot both deputies in the back of the head. Their patrol car crossed the median, climbed up an embankment, and crashed into a field. A policeman found both deputies sitting upright with their seat belts on. Both were dead. The suspect was in the back seat, unconscious from the impact.
The suspect had a criminal history that dated back to 1927. He had been convicted of assaults, weapons violations, and various other crimes. He was committed to a mental institution where he died in September of 1995.
Deputy Nolen had served with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department for one year. He was survived by his wife and five children.

Trooper April Styburski died after a fall during an accident investigation.
Trooper Styburski was investigating a property accident near Pingree Grove on U.S. 20, east of Elgin. She heard the sound of another accident nearby. Trooper Styburski turned and ran toward the second accident. She slipped on the icy pavement and landed on her back. The fall caused her to inhale so deeply that she inhaled gastric acid into her lungs which caused her vitals to shut down. She was taken to St. Joseph Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Trooper April Styburski was four year veteran of the Illinois State Police, and was assigned to District 2, Elgin; she was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. She had previously served as Specialist 4 with 822nd Military Police Company for the United States Army and is survived by her husband and son.
On March 15, 1991, the District 2 training room was re-dedicated in memory of Trooper Styburski.

Investigator Terry Thuma died of complications caused by a gunshot wound he received 13 years prior.
Investigator Thuma was paralyzed from the breast bone down, between vertebrae T5 and T6, after being shot while serving a drug warrant on July 23, 1977. He came down with a fast acting pneumonia and died in his sleep on January 9, 1990, as a result.
The suspect who shot Investigator Thuma was apprehended but acquitted of the charges.
At the time of his death, Investigator Thuma had served with the Orlando Police Department for over 19 years. He was survived by his two children.

Correctional Officer William Donaldson was stabbed to death by a prisoner at the West Jefferson Correctional Institute when he entered a segregation unit to dispense medicine.
The suspect who murdered Officer Donaldson had been originally sent to prison for the shooting death of Fairfield Police Officer Myron Massey in 1985 during a traffic stop. Some time after murdering Corrections Officer Donaldson the suspect committed suicide.
The West Jefferson Correctional Institute was later renamed in honor of Officer Donaldson. Officer Donaldson was survived by his wife and daughter.
